Clostridioides difficile is a gram-positive anerobic bacteria that forms spores and releases toxins. C. diff infection (CDI) has been a “difficult” one to defeat across the healthcare ecosystem. Spores live on surfaces for months, up to 50% of long-term care residents may be asymptomatic carriers, and both prevention and treatment recommendations have evolved quickly.

Keep reading for information on the key points we use to tackle this difficult infection together.

    Preventable ER Visits

Program Focus | Medication Safety Program

It is estimated that more than 1 million individuals are seen in hospital emergency departments for adverse drug events each year in the United States. Over one-quarter of these patients need to be hospitalized for further treatment. Patient safety and quality initiatives that focus on the medications and patient age groups most commonly involved in adverse drug events have the greatest potential for reducing the number of emergency department visits caused by adverse drug events.

Who Makes More Preventable Visits to the ER?

People in vulnerable populations — as defined by socioeconomic characteristics — made more preventable visits to emergency rooms than others from 2013 to 2017, according to a U.S. Census Bureau working paper.
