In Clinton County, Ind. the average rate of non-fatal emergency department visits due to opioid overdoses is two times higher than the state rate at 78.93 per 100,000. The county was ranked 3rd in the state with significantly higher non-fatal emergency department visits due to overdose. The Medicare population has among the highest and fastest-growing rates of diagnosed opioid use disorder, currently at more than six of every 1,000 patients.

Given the heightened awareness of pain management and the opioid epidemic, Qsource needed to create awareness that treatment of a sickle cell disease (SCD) pain crisis is a time-sensitive condition. Also, busy Emergency Department (ED) healthcare providers needed encouragement to use the current National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines and have systematic processes in place to treat SCD most effectively.
